The Cost You’ve Been Carrying: Navigating Finances in a World Not Built for Your Brain
You’ve spent years navigating a world that wasn't designed for you.
Before systems were built for different kinds of brains... Before financial advice accounted for the weight of neurodivergence... Before “just be organized” was recognized as outdated advice... You were there.
You showed up. You tried anyway. You kept going anyway. It’s time we talk about the invisible weight you've been hauling.
Understanding the "Executive Function Tax"
There is a cost that doesn’t show up on your bank statement, but it drains your energy nonetheless. In the neurodivergent community, we call this the Executive Function Tax.
It’s the extra time, effort, and emotional load required to navigate a financial world not built for your brain. It often looks like:
The Starting Stall: Spending hours—or days—thinking about a 10-minute task.
The "Out of Sight" Cost: Late fees, forgotten subscriptions, or misplaced invoices that slip through the mental cracks.
The Mental Weight: The sheer exhaustion that comes from the friction of just trying to begin.
This month, we aren't focusing on "trying harder." We’re focusing on lowering the friction.
Don't Do It Alone: The Power of Body Doubling
Facing a spreadsheet alone can feel like climbing a mountain without shoes. The silence makes the "to-do" list louder, doesn't it? That’s where Body Doubling comes in.
Sometimes, just having another human in the room (or on a screen) while you sort your receipts or pay that one bill makes the impossible feel doable. You don't need a lecture; you need a partner. Whether it’s a friend or a professional who "gets" it, support is a strategy, not a sign of weakness.
Try this today: Set a 15-minute timer and call a friend. Ask them to just stay on the line while you check your bank balance or file one receipt. You don't even have to talk—just be "together."
A Guided Reflection
As we move through Financial Literacy Month, I invite you to pause and check in with yourself:
✨ Where does managing money feel heavier than it “should”? Acknowledge that the weight you feel isn't a lack of discipline—it’s an energy cost.
✨ What tasks do you avoid? Not because you don’t care, but because they feel overwhelming to start. Consider what happens when we replace the label of "procrastination" with "overload."
✨ What would change if you approached your finances with support instead of pressure? If you allowed yourself to be helped, what mental space would that clear up?
Support is not a shortcut. It is a strategy for claiming authorship over your financial life.
